Which plants and which substrate
TheARRAY-PLANTER can be planted in a variety of ways. Buying smaller young plants can save costs and make planting easier. Alternatively, you can sow seeds in the planter boxes (including early on the windowsill). Replanting during or at the end of the season is easy, as you can remove the container from the railing at any time without any effort.
Ecologically sensible planting: Planting with native plants that offer ecological added value (keyword: insect and bee-friendly) and that cope well with the local climatic conditions is particularly sensible and sustainable.
If you like it climbing and colorful, you can plant black-eyed Susans, for example. Hollyhocks have also proved successful in sunny locations despite their size.
Plant according to location: The orientation of the balcony or window plays a key role in the duration and intensity of sunlight and water requirements. It may also make a difference whether the planted railings are directly exposed to the weather, e.g. the front of a balcony, or whether a canopy shields the plants from (normal) rain. If in doubt, we recommend using a moisture meter to regularly check the current water requirement.
Easy-to-care-for planting: A particularly low-maintenance option is planting with Sedum, as it is also used for green roofs, since it handles dry periods well. Additionally, Sedum plants are evergreen, so you have a green framing for your window or balcony even in winter. It should be noted that there are also native, hardy varieties of Sedum plants, as well as those that are less tolerant of low temperatures.
Winter planting:
- Pinus Pinea 'Silver Crest', also known as Compact Stone Pine, can be used in various ways. In an ARRAY-PLANTER , with winter decorations or colorful Christmas ornaments, the small fir tree creates a cozy atmosphere. It does well in partial shade, doesn't require much care, and has an average water requirement.
- The Christmas rose (Helleborus niger) is easy to care for and long-lasting with its beautiful cup-shaped flowers. The suitable location for them is rather bright to partially shaded, without direct sunlight. It should only be watered moderately to prevent waterlogging. To prevent skin irritation or small injuries when planting, it is best to use gloves, as the Christmas rose is toxic in all parts.
- The wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) with its red berries can be preserved throughout the winter. This plant is very frost-resistant and prefers a semi-shaded location. A loose soil supports its growth and berry formation.
